Jade Buddha Temple
Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple is located at 170 Anyuan Road, Putuo District, Shanghai. It is named for the worship of jade Buddha in the temple. At the same time, it is also called Jade Buddha Zen Temple because it belongs to the Linji system of Zen Buddhism and practices the Zen method. Jade Buddha Temple, as one of the top ten tourist attractions in Shanghai, is located in the bustling city but quiet, known as a pure land in the busy city.
History:
The founder and first abbot of the Jade Buddha Temple was Master Hui Gen. In the eighth year of Guangxu’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1882), Master Huigen invited five jade Buddhas back from India, left one sitting Buddha and one resleeping Buddha when he passed through Shanghai, and built a temple for worship in Jiangwan Town, that is, the original Jade Buddha Temple.
In the seventh year of the Republic of China (1918), after the destruction of the Jade Buddha Temple, it was rebuilt on the present site and renamed “Jade Buddha Zen Temple”.
After the founding of New China, the Jade Buddha Temple received several state grants for maintenance and reopened under the policy of freedom of religious belief.
Architectural features:
Jade Buddha Temple is an imitation of the Song temple building, the layout is rigorous, covers an area of about 11.6 mu, construction area of 8856 square meters.
The main buildings in the temple include the Heavenly King Hall, the Grand Hero Hall, and the Jade Buddha Building, which are all built in the style of the Song Dynasty temples.
Mahavira Hall is the main building of the temple, dedicated to Sakyamuni Buddha, Amitabha Buddha and medicine Buddha, the Buddha is 4 meters high, the whole body is covered with gold, golden.
The seated statue of the jade Buddha enshrined in the Jade Buddha Tower, 1.95 meters high, is carved from the whole piece of jade, carved carefully, and emits a crystal clear luster.
